How to Screenshot on HP Laptop (All Methods + Fix Common Issues)

Take screenshots on any HP laptop — Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, EliteBook, OMEN. Fix Fn key problems, Action Key Mode, and missing PrtSc keys.

How to Screenshot on HP Laptop (All Methods + Fix Common Issues)

HP makes more laptop models than almost any other manufacturer — Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, EliteBook, ProBook, Dragonfly, OMEN, Victus — and the keyboard layout changes between them. The Print Screen key might be a standalone key, a secondary function requiring Fn, or printed on the right Shift key with no obvious indication of how to use it.

This is why "hp print screen not working" is one of the most common complaints in HP support forums. The key isn't broken — it's just not where you expect it, or it needs a modifier key your previous laptop didn't require.

This guide covers every HP screen capture method and the specific fixes for each HP model line.

Quick Reference: HP Screenshot Shortcuts

Shortcut What It Does Where It Saves
PrtSc Copies full screen to clipboard Clipboard (paste to save)
Alt + PrtSc Copies active window to clipboard Clipboard (paste to save)
Win + PrtSc Captures full screen as file Pictures > Screenshots
Win + Shift + S Opens Snipping Tool overlay Clipboard + notification
Fn + PrtSc PrtSc on HP models that require Fn Same as PrtSc
Fn + Right Shift PrtSc on HP models with PrtSc on Shift key Same as PrtSc
Power + Vol Down Screenshot in tablet mode (x360) Pictures > Screenshots

This is the most reliable screenshot method on HP laptops because it works identically on every model — no Fn key confusion, no hunting for PrtSc.

  1. Press Win + Shift + S
  2. The screen dims and a toolbar appears at the top
  3. Choose a mode: rectangular, freeform, window, or fullscreen
  4. Select what you want to capture
  5. The screenshot copies to clipboard and a notification appears
  6. Click the notification to annotate and save in Snipping Tool

This bypasses the PrtSc key entirely. If you only remember one shortcut, make it this one.

Method 2: Print Screen Key

Print Screen works on HP laptops, but you need to know where the key is and whether it needs Fn.

PrtSc Location by HP Model

HP OMEN / Victus — PrtSc is in the top-right area, near Home and Page Up. On many OMEN and Victus models, PrtSc is an action key that requires Fn + PrtSc. Check whether Fn is needed on your specific model — it depends on your Action Key Mode setting.

HP Pavilion — PrtSc is usually in the top-right area. On some compact Pavilion models, PrtSc is printed on the right Shift key. Press Fn + Right Shift to activate.

HP Envy — PrtSc is typically above Backspace. Some Envy x360 models place it on the right Shift key, requiring Fn + Right Shift.

HP Spectre — varies by generation. Some Spectre models have a dedicated PrtSc key in the top row. Others (particularly x360 variants) put PrtSc on the right Shift key.

HP EliteBook — on compact EliteBook models (2560p, 8460p), PrtSc shares a key with Insert — the key is labeled "Ins/PrtSc." On EliteBook 830/840 G5 and G6 models with the collaboration keyboard layout, PrtSc requires Fn + the key.

HP ProBook — PrtSc is in the top-right area. Many ProBook models require Fn + PrtSc.

HP Dragonfly — PrtSc is printed on the upper-right corner of the right Shift key. The Dragonfly also has an HP Programmable Key (F12) that you can assign to launch Snipping Tool.

Once you've found PrtSc on your HP model:

  • PrtSc — copies the full screen to clipboard (paste with Ctrl + V)
  • Alt + PrtSc — copies only the active window to clipboard
  • Win + PrtSc — captures full screen and saves automatically to C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Screenshots

Fixing PrtSc Issues on HP

Problem: PrtSc Does Nothing

Step 1 — Try Fn + PrtSc. This is the fix 90% of the time on HP business laptops.

Step 2 — Try Fn + Right Shift. On HP Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, and Dragonfly models where PrtSc is on the Shift key.

Step 3 — Check Fn Lock. Press Fn + Esc (most HP consumer models) or Fn + Left Shift (EliteBook and ProBook models) to toggle Fn Lock. An LED on the Fn or Esc key shows the current state. When Fn Lock is engaged, function keys send F1-F12 codes by default.

Step 4 — Check Action Key Mode in BIOS:

  1. Shut down your HP laptop
  2. Turn it on and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears
  3. Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup
  4. Navigate to System Configuration
  5. Find Action Keys Mode and toggle it
  6. Save and exit

When Action Keys Mode is enabled, F-row keys perform their printed action (brightness, volume) by default — Fn + key sends F1-F12. When disabled, the behavior is reversed.

Step 5 — Check for software conflicts. OneDrive, Dropbox, and some clipboard managers can intercept the PrtSc key and redirect captures to their own folders. Check these apps' settings if PrtSc seems to work but nothing appears where you expect.

Step 6 — Windows 11 PrtSc redirect. On Windows 11, PrtSc opens Snipping Tool by default instead of copying to clipboard. To change this: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard and toggle "Use the Print Screen key to open screen capture."

Problem: Num Lock Interference

On some HP models with a numpad, the Num Lock state can interfere with PrtSc behavior. Try pressing Num Lock to toggle it, then try PrtSc again.

Method 3: Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool is built into Windows 10 and 11 and sidesteps all HP keyboard issues.

  1. Search for "Snipping Tool" in the Start menu, or press Win + Shift + S for the quick overlay
  2. Choose a capture mode — rectangular, freeform, window, or fullscreen
  3. Set a delay if needed (3, 5, or 10 seconds on Windows 11)
  4. Capture your selection
  5. Annotate with arrows, highlights, text, and blur
  6. Save as PNG, JPG, or GIF

For a complete walkthrough of every Snipping Tool feature, see our Snipping Tool guide.

Method 4: Xbox Game Bar

  1. Press Win + G to open the Game Bar
  2. Click the camera icon or press Win + Alt + PrtSc to capture the active window
  3. Screenshots save to C:\Users\YourName\Videos\Captures

For screen recording, press Win + Alt + R. Game Bar can't capture the desktop or File Explorer — only app windows.

Method 5: HP x360 and Convertible Tablet Mode

When using an HP x360 (Pavilion x360, Envy x360, Spectre x360) or any HP convertible in tablet mode:

  1. Press and hold Power + Volume Down simultaneously for about 2 seconds
  2. The screen flashes to confirm the capture
  3. The screenshot saves to Pictures > Screenshots

You can also use the Snipping Tool via the Start menu touchscreen, or use the Action Center "Screen snip" button.

HP Programmable Key (EliteBook & Dragonfly)

HP EliteBook and Dragonfly models with a Programmable Key (the F12 key) can be configured to launch any app with a single press — including Snipping Tool.

  1. Install the HP Programmable Key app from the Microsoft Store
  2. Open the app and assign Snipping Tool (or any screenshot tool) to the key
  3. Press F12 to instantly launch your screenshot tool

This is a useful shortcut for users who take screenshots frequently and want a dedicated one-press capture key.

Screen Recording on HP

HP doesn't include proprietary recording software. Use these Windows built-in options:

Xbox Game Bar — press Win + Alt + R to start and stop recording. Saves MP4 to Videos > Captures. Supports microphone and system audio.

Snipping Tool (Windows 11) — open the app and select Record. Good for tutorials and walkthroughs.

HP OMEN Gaming Hub — pre-installed on OMEN laptops. Includes a performance overlay during games, but relies on Windows Game Bar for actual screen capture and recording.

For more options, see our screen recording software comparison.

Beyond Basic Screenshots

If you need polished screenshots with backgrounds, shadows, or device mockups, the built-in Windows tools stop at raw captures. Captio is a browser extension that captures specific webpage elements and provides a compositor for adding gradient backgrounds, 3D perspective transforms, and device frames. There's also a free screenshot beautifier for quick styling without installing anything.

HP Screenshot FAQ

Why does Print Screen not work on my HP laptop?

HP business laptops (EliteBook, ProBook, Dragonfly) often require Fn + PrtSc. On some Pavilion, Envy, and Spectre models, PrtSc is on the right Shift key — press Fn + Right Shift. Check Action Key Mode in BIOS and look for third-party apps (OneDrive, Dropbox) that might be intercepting the key.

Where is the Print Screen key on HP laptops?

It varies. OMEN and Victus have a dedicated key in the top-right. Pavilion and Envy may have PrtSc on the right Shift key. EliteBook compact models share PrtSc with Insert. On the Dragonfly, it's on the right Shift key. If you can't find it, use Win + Shift + S instead.

How do I take a screenshot on an HP x360 in tablet mode?

Press Power + Volume Down simultaneously for about 2 seconds. The screenshot saves to Pictures > Screenshots.

How do I change the Fn key behavior on HP laptops?

Press Fn + Esc (consumer models) or Fn + Left Shift (EliteBook/ProBook) to toggle Fn Lock (an LED shows the state). Or enter BIOS (Esc at startup, then F10) and change Action Keys Mode under System Configuration.

Does HP have screenshot software pre-installed?

No dedicated screenshot app. HP uses Windows built-in tools. However, EliteBook and Dragonfly models with the HP Programmable Key (F12) can be set to launch Snipping Tool — install the HP Programmable Key app from the Microsoft Store.

Can I record my screen on an HP laptop?

Yes — press Win + Alt + R for Xbox Game Bar recording, or use Snipping Tool's Record option on Windows 11.
